Many so-called paediatric wheelchairs are derived from adult wheelchairs and retain many features which cause unnecessary weight. They also frequently lack the adjustability required to achieve an acceptable propelling efficiency or the right balance for manoeuvrability and safety. Seating and positioning facilities are at best basic and at worst a serious impediment to independence, mobility, health and wellbeing.
